Wow, I Hated That Movie!

Ever notice there's a crap-load of people out there suggesting bad movies to watch? I have. My first question is: where did all these bad ideas come from? My second question is: how can I stop them?

I just don't get it. I mean, I know not everyone agrees with my taste in films or applauds my list of favourite actors (so what, I like Kathy Bates!?), but I'm not talking about taste, I'm talking about people who watch a bad film and something happens in their brains that makes them think that it's a good movie. Moreover, these people don't just think it's a good movie, they think it's a great movie.

Now I'm not talking about critics here, I'm talking about people you know, people you trust. People you work with. People you go out for dinner with. These are the people you sleep with for goodness sake. These are the people who pull you aside at the water cooler, look you in the eyes and meaningfully say: "Hey, I saw Blah, Blah on the weekend. It was great! You should watch it!"

Then, because you trust them, because you care about them, hell—because you're sleeping with them (or both)— you go out to the theatre, or you rent that movie, or (better yet) you download it... and guess what? Not only is it not great, it's bloody awful! It's in fact so awful, that you feel compelled to go back to them the next day with a stack of exceptional films, films that brought you to tears, films that you were dorky enough to applaud in the movie theatre, so that you can point out just how terrible their judgment in movies is.

I know, you know what (and who) I'm talking about. I mean come on, let's face it, there have been many 'great movies' over the years, like Chicago, Fracture, Moulin Rouge. But maybe, in your heart of hearts you will agree, these films were more fluff than anything else.

So, to prevent you from renting more 'non-films,' I thought this issue I would layout some recent films that were deemed great by the masses, but in the end, hit my "not great" list. Don't enjoy.

Gran Torino (2008 - Clint Eastwood)

watch the movie trailer

Gran TorinoOkay—for the record. I have always hated movies directed by Clint Eastwood. His films are usually very slow, and generally pointless. But then everyone (including the critics) said that The Changeling was terrible and I happened to watch it. Well guess what, I thought it was great... that's right! So, I thought I'd give Clint another chance, since he directed The Changeling as well as Gran Torino. Well, Gran Torino stinks... really bad.

Even though I was told by others that it was a decent film, I'm proud to be the minority who will be truthful enough to say that it's terrible. The characters aren't realistic, the dialogue is ill-fitting and the film plays out more as an afterschool special about racism and bigotry, than something of substance.

Just listen to me, if you haven't watched it yet—don't.

Slumdog Millionaire (2008 - Danny Boyle )

Slumdog MillionaireSomebody please explain to me why this movie is considered to be good. It's more like a tv movie of the week than a real film.

I've heard some people say "I loved the cinematography." Really? I hated the way the movie was filmed. To me, bad filmmaking is filmmaking that calls attention to itself and Slumdog's over the top cinematography is no exception. It's all flash, no substance. What worked for director Danny Boyle in films like 28 Days Later and Trainspotting, seems overdone and out of place in the context of Slumdog's subject matter.

Who Wants to be a Millionaire barely excited me when it was on the television, let alone has resonance for me as a metaphor for a global fascination with greed.

But hey, if you're like the rest of the world, perhaps you loved this film. I know a few peeps at my work seemed to think it was worth mentioning. But to be honest, I'm not talking to them anymore.

Duchess (2008 - Saul Dibb )

watch the movie trailer

DuchessNow, I know that nobody told me this movie was great, except for the Academy. And I know, I know that the Academy often elects movies for Oscars that aren't that great, but I gave this a watch anyway—somewhat hoping for a miracle. Well that miracle never transpired.

The Duchess is one of those common British period films, that looks fantastic, but in the end doesn't shock you, barely moves you, and in general, leads you to daydream about what you are going to do tomorrow morning, after you've downed a cup of coffee and had a pleasant role in the hay.

So, maybe in that way, it's not a bad way to spend a Friday night.
