Daddy Does Movie Night
As part of a sly little seasonal switcheroo on the part of the editor, I'm here talking about movies. At first I thought this to be an easy gig--I love movies. But I'd become hindered by the vast possibilities. But then it hit me. While I love movies, and used to go to the theatres regularly pre-kids, these days getting to an actual theatre is a kind of minor miracle. So my movie-going life happens in my living room.
So I thought what better way to chronicle movie nights for a newish father than discussing the last five films I've watched at home. Because if I had to base it on what I saw at the cineplex I'd be telling you tales of films from a few years ago. So here is a look at what the last five movie nights have looked like in the Ragno household.
This movie rocked. Fun, fast-paced and Robert Downey Jr. was fantastic as the title character. This was great escapist cinema to me. Action. Humour. Hot cars. High-tech gadgets. It had it all. I can't wait for the next one (you did wait until the end of the credits didn't you, to catch the last little extra scene?).
I liked Jerry Seinfeld's attempt at cartoon humour more than the average reviewer. Maybe people had expectations that were so high, given Seinfeld's involvement, they could never be met. For me, though, I laughed a lot throughout the show and thought there were many clever lines that kept me entertained. At least until the last twenty minutes or so where the film started to lose momentum. But overall, quite entertaining.
This movie kept me entertained and it looked fantastic. Pixar films have such a great look to them I usually spend half the time just marvelling at the detail, only later realizing I missed a lot of the story. While Wall-E was good, it wasn't as good as other Pixar offerings. I loved The Incredibles, for example, but maybe it's just because I overly identified with Mr. Incredible and his desire to break free from his monotonous life as an office drone. But that's another article.
I was pleasantly surprised by this film. I was originally resitant to watch it, since I'm not that into fantasy themes, but I finally gave in and can only say I was quickly drawn into the story and quite mesmerized by the art direction and effects. Overall the film balanced wonderfully the reality and fantasy themes and made the whole thing a great trip.
I didn't see the first installment, but I was encouraged to just dive in. Again, I was surprised how much I enjoyed this film. Tonnes of humour sprinkled throughout gave the movie a lighter tone than I expected, which worked perfectly.
So there you have it. My last five films, all watched at home, often on my own, as my better half gave in to our collective sleeplessness.
