The Lovely Things in Life to Rant About

Like you, I’ve read M.E. Ash’s Rant This before, and possibly like you, I’ve felt the frustration well up in me as I ranted along with him.

Well this month, as we come to the end of our first year of the New Town Crier, an online zine that is more like collective journalling for public consumption than a magazine, I thought it would be a perfect end to put our writers' names in a hat, and see what they do with their temporary assignment of writing each other's column. It's been an interesting exercise and here I sit, writing Rant This.

But unlike the lovely M.E. I've decided that although there's a lot of negative stuff to rant about, like the current homeless situation in Victoria, or the fact that whenever you buy cheese from Fairway Market it's already mouldy, I thought I'd do something a little different. I thought I'd rant about all the lovely things in life that make me glad I'm still walking the earth.

Oh the lovely things...

Like kissing (not kicking) a Ginger. For finding your favourite bottle of wine (McLarens on the Lake), and drinking the whole thing. Like dancing in my office chair to the new Britney while I work (you read that right, I dance in my chair).

I'm grateful:

For Dashund puppies who look like little brown rats on strings. Those lovely girls who sing out loud, despite soundling like the little kids in Charlie Brown's Christmas. For rereading my favourite book for the second time, and loving it even more.

For turning off my TV. For not checking my email; for living my life like I did 15 years ago (what a concept). For girls that look good in heels.

For fucking to a good song; for playing that song on repeat. For road trips. For Terry Fox. For never giving up.

For soft little bellies, and the hands that caress them. For never cheating on your girlfriend and for never wanting to. For deciding you’re no longer afraid to fly. For movies that make you cry. For people who aren't afraid to love themselves. For not fitting in. For buying a ring, even if you don’t believe in marriage. For believing in people, even if most of them are assholes. For sending flowers. For receiving gifts. For taking a compliment. For telling it like it is. For knowing when you screwed up. For forgiving yourself.

For following your intuition. For checking the due date on produce before you purchase it. For music. For thoughtful stalkers; the people who notice you in the nicest possible way. For forgoing the sunrise to spend a few extra moments in bed...

For finding your way out. For finding your way back. For staying in on New Years Eve. For choosing not to drive in the snow. For believing in Santa, even if the guy at work tells you that Santa doesn't come to Canada anymore.

For loving something more than you can handle. For being good to others. For having purpose. For being passionate despite all the luke warm people. For using your hands.

For giving the best all round gift and meaning it: one mind-blowing orgasm followed by a hug. Everyone knows, the best things in life always come in pairs.

Happy Holidays!
