Desert Thoughts
I had to get away. Up Island, I could feel my time wrapping up. School is nearly finished, I’m on leave from work, so I hopped in the car with my faithful companion Hezron and headed for the Okanagan. Yes, I quit my job; yes I’ve been a little depressed, but after a week here, I am happy again. Unemployed, slightly directionless, but relaxed and happy. I figure this is the only life I have: I am eager and willing to do the things that bring me joy and leave the rest behind. My friends will always be there and I will make new ones along the way, but I resolve to abide by Joseph Campbell’s sage advice, “follow your bliss.”
Today is the last day of my first week in this rich, hot deserty-valley. I will go through many bottles of sunscreen and practice yoga daily; eat fresh-picked fruits and vegetables and pull my health back up to par.
I don’t know where I’m going to go next, but I will keep you posted. Change doesn’t always happen by chance; sometimes you need to shove a twig into the spokes and hope for the best.
